End of Summer Sale at Mary Jane’s

Don’t be a Festival Fashion Flop

Summer is in full swing and the music and art festivals are on everyone’s calendar. There are many free concerts lined up in St. Louis this summer, like the Sounds at the Station, Jungle Boogie, and Maplewood Summer Concerts. Figuring out an outfit for these crowded outdoor venues can be an endeavor in itself. What do you wear when you will be rubbing up against the grunge punk goth guy as you walk past the mosh pit or fawning all over your favorite band members when you run into them in the beer tent?

Do’s
1. Wear smart shoes like a strappy sandal (Sam Edelman Gigis $119) that let your feet breathe and are easy to slip off and drop in your bag when you hit the grass or a pair of low rise Hunter rainboots if mother nature looks like she is going to rain on your parade.   Sandals can be worn with anything, but stick to shorts or shorter skirts with the boots otherwise your legs will appear shorter than they actually are.

2. Pair lightweight cotton skirts (like the striped Michael Stars maxi) or printed denim shorts (Blank Banana Hot Fudge, $75) with your favorite off the shoulder tees and tanks.  Neon colors or prints are the “rage”.

3. Try a small saddle bag (Melie Bianco) slung low across your hips as your carryall.  You only need sunglasses, lip gloss, blotting papers, id, cash and of course your iPhone to make it through the day.

Don’ts
1. Don’t overdo the looks of the day. Fringe top, combined with cutoff shorts, combined with ikat bag, combined with combat boots…only makes you look like you should be hanging out at the mall asking for change.

2. Don’t pile on the makeup; it will be around your neck by the end of the day. Try a tinted moisturizer with some light powder, a waterproof mascara, and a long wearing lip stain to keep your look fresh. Bring a travel-sized spritzer and blotting papers to keep your look dewy.

3. Unless you are Kate Moss, don’t wear anything showing your mid-section. Guaranteed someone will get a snapshot of you bending over where the muffin top or rolls you are desperately trying to hide are on display…and yes the photo will be on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram within minutes because your friends love to share embarrassing photos.
